Any games on the market that aren't super casual these days?

Competitive multi-player games would be the obvious answer. Starcraft 2, CS:GO, Natural Selection 2, etc.

This is the real answer. If you want a challenge without being restricted to just a few newer titles, old titles, indie titles, then you will have to go online and compete with other players.

I think the gaming experience changed over the years. In the past, it really was more about gameplay. Pacman would be an extreme example. Playing the game was all that the developer wanted you to do. It was more important to have a challenge than for the player to be able to "finish" the game. In the 90's we still had plenty of games , even the popular franchises like Megaman or even Mario, where there was no guarantee that you would ever be able to finish it (and some people could not). But it was all about the gameplay, and to get something out of the game there was no need to finish it.

But now, gaming is more focused on story telling. The developers intend for anyone who attempts to play the game to get through the story. Games have become more like interactive movies, where going through the story becomes as important or more important than the actual gameplay. We see this all the time. Take Mass Effect for example. Now, I love the series, but for me it is more of an interactive space opera than a game. I played the game on normal and you just go through it headshotting everything without any resistance. The problem with playing games like this on the harder difficulties is that gameplay does not really feel tight or satisfying enough to remain fun on those difficulty setting. It is not like you are playing Ninja gaiden or other games with great higher difficulty settings, which are clean and skill-based. Abilities are kind of messy and gameplay too uninteresting.

The games that are now said to be super hard, proabably are still easier than a lot of the games we played on the Snes. like Super Ghouls and Goblins 2, hell maybe even Gremlind the new batch. Maybe not the best games out there, but that just illustrates how completely mundane games, even based on a movie, used to offer more challenge than most games nowadays.

First mistake is playing Dark souls over Demon's sous. Demon's souls was way way way better. IMO

It's may be better but its easier than Dark souls.

TC try "Volgarr the Viking" on steam, if you're looking for a challenge.

What is the steam box going to be? Is it going to be an actual stand alone machine for gaming like a console. Basically a pre-packaged machine that will utilize the new Steam OS?

Well it hasn't been announced yet, but most likely yeah, something like that. I can't see it taking over the console market but I said the same thing about Xbox...
