Is Metro: Last Light the beginning of Linux gaming?

#1ECOsvaldoPosted 9/24/2013 2:10:12 AM
With last month's announcement of releasing Metro: Last Light for Linux later this year, is 4A Games/Deep Silver the first third-party company to kickstart the movement of porting games over to the Linux platform? All it takes is one company to start it! I strongly believe that not making your games cross-platform is the same as losing money. Locking yourself into Microsoft’s DirectX is the reason game companies have such a hard time porting.

What's also interesting is at this years PAX, game developers had said that their #1 wish was for GPU manufacturers to drop support for DirectX and focus on OpenGL. Check out the video at the 8:56 minute mark and see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGqu4CsUX9I

Plus, to be honest here, most people that are stuck in their old ways will rationalize their ‘need to keep' Windows or a Mac, even full knowing the NSA's involvement with both Apple and Microsoft (creating backdoor access into Windows for the alphabet agency). I strongly believe that they're either scared to try Linux out or just don't want to bother with it since there's way more support for the closed OS's.

What are your thoughts?

Who cares? Windows will be the most compatible OS for decades to come. Get over it.

Basically hes mocking you for being arrogant, which is deserved.

For instance, Dota 2 will reach 4 times the audience that Metro:LL could ever hope for, so basically you're a tool.

Linux games have been around for about as long as Linux has, and high-profile ones for almost as long as that. It must have been 15 years ago that I first heard people saying Linux was about to finally take off as a gaming OS and that would bring it to the mainstream. It didn't happen then. Every few years since I've seen people making the same claim. Hasn't happened yet.

There are lots of games that you can play on Linux but it will probably always be trying to play catch-up with Windows. I doubt it will ever take off and become viable as a replacement for Windows for PC games.
