In the market for a laptop. Clueless and feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Also, when you say you are worried about them 'gimping' on the display, keep in mind you are looking for a budget laptop, gimping is the name of the game.

I was actually replying to someone else who mentioned that about the one suggested in the first post. I was stating that I'm not worried about them skimping in that department, mostly because I'll be using my big screen for the display the vast majority of the time.

That one you posted does look really nice from what little I know. I may have to see if I can get them to pay a little more. But since I'm not paying for it I'm not exactly confident I can pull it off. Plus, I'd hate to seem ungrateful by asking for more. Maybe I can pull together a little extra cash of my own to cover the difference.

When it comes to a laptop, always go ASUS if you can.

They're just... So great.

I appreciate the suggestions. And with the catching up research I've been doing I think I'm getting a fair enough grasp of the differences, pros, cons, etc. It was mostly the processors that had me feeling overwhelmed. There just seemed to be so many of them. I may be able to figure this out after all. lol

What I'd recommend is getting whatever laptop suits your fancy, and then putting a SSD drive in it. Most of the "slowdown" people associate with a computer is due to the limited speed of their hard drive.

Or more likely said hard drive is stuffed full of various torrented porn/movies/music etc. and the malware/viruses that go alone with that.

After finding someone who was willing to take the time to explain things to me and help me understand what I was looking at, why one is better than the other, etc. I ended up going with that one. I was a little iffy about the lack of an optical drive. But if I really find myself needing one I can get an external drive on the cheap later. I may end up doing this since I have some older games i like to play form time to time and a large collection of CD's that I bought many years ago.
