A release of a operating system directly from a Game developer has never happened (And if it has, it's never been at this scale or notable in history) which makes it gain a lot of attention. A release of open hardware & software platform directly from a game developer has never happened, so this too will get a lot of attention.
I don't think you understand The Big Picture of this all. There will be people who have Steam branded computers, running SteamOS, playing games on Steam, chatting with people on Steam, buying movies and music on Steam.

I wouldn't say it's "hype over nothing"... it could have been worse... look at the Xbone's release announcements where they had to backtrack and change a ton of stuff... not to mention making a big deal about the machine and then turns out their most hyped feature was "Watch TV!"
