AMD Mantle revealed

#1Bazooka_PenguinPosted 9/25/2013 3:16:30 PM
During the AMD Hawaii Event, one of DICE's technical directors for Frostbite 3 announced Mantle, a new low-level API being developed by AMD in cooperation with DICE. It is designed for AMD GPUs (most likely only the GCN cards) and DICE plans to have their Frostbite 3 engine render natively with Mantle.

It has lower CPU overhead, "perfect" parallel rendering (utilizing all 8 CPU cores), and low-level access to the hardware. According to AMD, Mantle will enable 9x more draw calls than other APIs and give full access to GPU features (probably referencing how AMD cards have featured hardware support for features like tessellation years before DirectX standardized it). Battlefield 4 will get Mantle support in December, and it seems it will be the first game to support it.

This is going to be huge. Nvidia can kiss their ferret-loving asses goodbye

I'm looking forward to more news. Whether the industry adapts is another discussion but with AMD having the monopoly on the hardware in the new consoles, inparticular the PS4 plus with this SteamOS thing I reckon there might be a good chance some good things will become of this

It's at the very end of the event, when the DICE guys starts talking about BF4

It's an API for graphics. So probably not?

AMD talked about how they were going to assist developers in porting games. Perhaps Mantle will be used on consoles as well, since both the PS4 and X1 are going to be using GCN GPUs

Mantle sounds quite promising, and Nvidia will probably have to get on with the program in order to remain competitive. It's a good thing though that Mantle seems to be open-source.

Yes, I'm sure Nvidia will have fun adapting an API that's designed for a completely different GPU architecture (GCN).
