My hard drive failed, but now it is working?

I have an HP laptop.

Yesterday, after leaving my laptop plugged in and on, it shut off and refused to turn on.

It wouldn't progress to my Windows 8 desktop at all. I had a chat with HP over the internet (on another computer) and we did some system tests. One of the tests told me that my hard drive had failed. Me, being a college student, felt a bit sad inside knowing that I've lost some papers and information saved, but alas I tell them that I can send in my laptop for repair.

The next day I decide to fiddle with the laptop in hopes of reviving it. After a few restarts, I get a message saying Windows didn't start up correctly, so I go through a bunch of stuff to refresh my pc and viola, everything is pristine again. I've restarted my laptop to ensure that it works, and about 15 restarts later, it is fine.

Has this happened to anyone/Can anyone explain what is going on?

Do a backup right now. It may be temporary

I've moved everything important onto my Google Drive as of now. I didn't have any important things besides documents.
