Media consumption, retro game emulation, and maybe some light web browsing.

This is effectively all the masses use their PC's for or rather did.

ADD, no. Where is the thread for Fallout OCD players?

If you have a desktop PC and couldn't care less about gaming on the big screen or you already have a means of doing so, the Steam box isn't for you. However, SteamOS may have some potential in the future as an alternative to using Windows if most of what you do on PC is game and web browsing.

I would just move my PC out there before I would spend $300-$400 on a streaming console.

Is Valve following the path of many a PC companies before them and turning their back on us?

While this is a major selling point and feature of the Steambox, that's not the ultimate goal Valve is going for. They're hoping that the SteamOS and Steambox catch on and convince developers to switch from using DirectX to OpenGL and Linux for future PC games.

Smartphones today are an order of magnitude better than desktop PCs where when I was a kid.

Except that they have tiny little screens and no decent way to type. Even a 20 year old PC is better at that than the best cellphone.

I'll give you the typing thing, but I gotta say... while the screens may be smaller on phones now, phone resolution kicks the ass of old Apple II's and stuff... 320x200 is practically the size of my old flip phone's screen.

The moment I see lots of people walking around with a bluetooth keyboard that they whip out of their back pocket and use with their cellphones, I'll agree.

And they still have tiny screens.

Tiny, but way better than old computer screens - they can present more data at one time, in more colors, and much sharper.

I actually don't care about Bluetooth keyboards - I've seen them (I assume you're talking about the little folding ones), and they're still smaller than average and not exactly pleasant to type on.

No one walks around with a 20 year old PC either.
