My internet is connected, but it's not working?

#1StormKMDPosted 9/27/2013 8:30:24 AM
Hey guys, I'm having internet issues with my laptop. I currently have Ubuntu 12.04 on it, and after getting some updates (79 I think it was), the internet stopped working. But the strange part is, it says it's connected to the router. I'm using wireless. I'm absolutely clueless as to what this means. I did look in some forums and someone said it's probably a DNS server problem, but I don't really know what that mean. Help?

If you are connected to your router but your internet is not working it generally means that your modem isn't working. check your internet status on your modem. when this happens to me i usually just reset my modem and it works, but sometimes the internet actually is down from time to time

Open a terminal window, type: ping www.google.com
...then press Enter.
What do you get?

Well, there's an issue guys. All my devices that are using wireless can't connect. It says they're connected, but I cannot download, open a web browser, etc. As for pinging, it just says it doesn't exist. However, my desktop (connected via ethernet cable) is working fine.

I went to my router settings and my desktop shows up as the only attached device...not good...

EDIT: wait, there is one more. It's a wireless, and it just says <unknown>

Weird, I went to my router login and hit test, now everythings back. In fact, everything was working until I opened up my laptop and tried to open web pages, etc. Did Ubuntu do anything, perhaps?

Try and reproduce the issue several times to be certain it's ubuntu and not the router just being super flaky.
