Just looking at the gamepad, it seems obvious that games will need to be patched to work well with it.

Yes, and it will have a hardware emulation mode so you can use it even on games that weren't designed for a controller at all.

It will work - but "well"? I sincerely doubt that.

At best it would work little better than playing a first person shooter with a trackpad.
