Right now it seems sort of pointless to some people, especially to those who have PCs hooked up to their TV already and runs Windows. That all may be very true but look at what is happening to desktops: they are pretty much going out of style in the mass consumer market. They're a fossil to most people who have moved on to laptops and tablets.

Go to Best Buy and count how many desktops you see for sale versus how many laptops and especially tablets. As desktop becomes less common even in the professional world the desktop is bound for extinction.

Enter the Steambox.

If the Steambox takes hold now, when the inevitable happens Steambox will not only be the best viable platform to play PC games on, but all games will be programmed for Linux and by that time it will have removed the death grip of Microsoft that has forced PC gamers to play games on an OS less than optimized to play games.

PC games will then have a advantage that it has never had. A clean OS and less differences in hardware configuration so games can be optimized much better by the developers.

Why do You think Nvidia is helping them? They see the writing on the wall.

Steambox also has the established digital download business model that console makers can only dream of. Steam has the track record of being good for business and the consumer. Microsoft's idea of an exclusive digital download business model is high price control and micro transactions. Sony ain't any different. Nintendo, well, Nintendo is just Nintendo, irrelevant to event mention them.
