Shadow Warrior is probably the most fun I've had in an FPS in quite a while

It's great to see an FPS that doesn't necessarily take itself seriously, but can be a blast at the same time.

The swordplay is awesome, the guns feel amazing, and the humor isn't too shabby.

Just throwing my two cents out there. If you are on the ropes about buying it, definitely go for it.

Yea, it was one of the funniest FPS games I've ever played. Are you using a DOS emulator or something?

The problem with it I have so far is that the formula doesn't really change. You enter an area, fight dudes, and then explore. The exploration is a little weak as there are many invisible walls so jumping around to find well hidden secrets just isn't a thing.

Luckily the katana mechanics make the combat fun as heck. Being able to double tap a direction while using the mouse buttons to cast spells and perform special moves really adds to the speedy dynamic. The main problem I have (playing on insane) is that all the weapons feel almost completely underpowered and boring to use in comparison to the katana. You can speed burst up to most encounters so thats where the fun is at.

Enemy variety is pretty decent and I've encountered about 10 different enemy types plus 1 boss so far. Level design is linear but has plenty of open arenas to explore and some of the secrets are a joy to find. The humor seems dialed back compared to the racist original but, I've still chuckled a few times.

Currently just over half done and really quite happy with the purchase. Graphics are good with a few little hiccups (some bad texturing and skyboxes) but its not as optimized as it could be. I know that word gets misused all the time but here it fits with some of the higher end effects. Performance can be erratic at times with no apparent reason with some of the settings. Currently playing it on high on my machine with decent results.

I wholly recommend it to anyone wanting a fairly fast old school shooter experience. I can't wait to beat it then replay it on casual xD

edit: Some screenshots (almost all just scenery so no spoilers)

I enjoyed playing the first. I'll have to think about the remake.

The original was the worst of the build engine, IMO, and I played the @#%! out of it back in the day.
Is Low Wang even in the game?

I'll probably get it during the next Steam sale

Its nice compared to modern FPS standards. Doesn't hold a candle to the original, though. Way too much like Painkiller for that (and it also has no coop, sigh). Get it on sale.

And yes, I say this considering Shadow Warrior, the original, was one of the weaker FPS of its time (under Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and Blood).

Also, the humor is a lot worse than the original. There's a few cookie lines that made me giggle. Lo Wang's voice is bad and his lines are terrible, though.

The only real redeeming quality of this game is its arsenal. Fully upgraded weapons and sword play makes for pretty meaty and satisfying combat. Plus, the game has a dodge mechanic -> something I wish was a FPS standard (though not as exaggerated).

Unfortunately it makes rather poor use of it with its enemies and level design, all designed to be shallow and repetitive, it seems.

Really was tempted to buy it first day but with spending so much still on GTA V and GTA Online starting Tuesday I just couldn't justify the money on something I wouldn't play for a while.

You play as Lo Wang, it's a prequel set quite a few years before the first.
