Battlefield 3's been using Nvidia's NVAPI all along

While it doesn't seem to be a standalone graphics API like Mantle, it's a development tool that gives lower-access to GPUs than DirectX, for further optimizations. I'd bet many of Nvidia sponsored games also used this in development to eek out more performance on Nvidia's cards.

Goes to show just how far behind the ball AMD is right? xD Nvidia has been getting more from less for a long time.

Behind the ball with software support. Their hardware is top-notch to have kept them so competitive. Now they have a chance to surpass Nvidia in all regards.

I don't see this happening. The 580 was vastly superior to the 6000 series. It was a complete smashing in every respect: compute, tessellation, memory bandwidth etc. - everything.

The 7000 series is great with memory bandwidth and compute, but still not so hot at tessellation.

Even if they surpass Nvidia software wise, their hardware isn't superior in all respects. The 6970 was kind of junky compared to the 580 and AMD's software support back then was pretty poor (no frame pacing fixes, CF in the dumps etc.)

AMD still survived and moved forward. Any advantages AMD gain will be transient and vice versa.

But right now Nvidia are in the lead both hardware wise and software wise. GCN is really good, but it's taken a lot of time to get the most out of it, and Nvidia had the luxury of releasing the titan on their terms, and on their pricing scheme.

Unless they screwed up since then they have a considerable advantage.
