It was always a niche, its just that gaming wasn't much more than a niche back then, especially on PC. Modern shooters have taken over, and nobody seems to care about this sort of game. They all want military shooters. There might be a crowd for it, but for a company big enough to pull something good enough and have enough publicity to keep it alive, is damn near impossible today.

You can still find a few people playing the Unreal Tournament games, (even the first one), pretty hardcore folks though, you'll have a really tough times.

There are a few options for unusual multiplayer FPS that aren't boring military shooters, but aren't anything like UT either. Team Fortress 2, Natural Selection 2, Left 4 Dead 2, to name a few.

Shootmania is a bit like the old school UT and Quake 3 games.

Call of Duty casuals happened. Hardcore twitch shooters like Unreal Tournament were "too hard" since there was no regenerating health, no cover and flanking and stuff... it was all about who had the fastest reactions, best aim, and knew how to use their weapons well. These days, kids seem to want near invulnerability from regenerating health, aim assist, etc.

I see games like that as more along the lines of soccer trophies they pass out to kids "just for existing."

Give me UT any day.

I know the console Cod's have aim assist and its just flattery for modern kids, but do the PC version have aim assist, I cant remember was years since I played one.

I cant believe UT-style fps is dead, upon returning I was expecting some hugely support epic update to UT, I found Xonotic with 7 players. great.

So to play with other people I gotta buy COD Ghost and have my hand held and back patted
