Just bought used graphics card, gets real hot quickly

I just got a HD 7850 for $100 (2GB version) and the fan gets rattly above 50% power and I want to tone it down, but that thing peaks above 100C in some games.

Are XFX cards just notoriously bad with heat? I shouldn't have fell for the nice aluminum finish. Would most GPU coolers be an improvement? I was thinking about this passive one, actually

What are your idle temps?

I think you need to RMA that thing, now.

Edit: you bought a used card, from who? Can't say I'm surprised.

I don't think I can RMA it guys, it's bought in used condition >_>

It stays at 40 to 45C idle.

100C is the absolute highest I've seen, but usually it stays around 85 to 90C when gaming.

That's meltdown already.
The card is probably throttling back to cool itself at that point.

Replace the thermal paste. Stock manufacturers usually put way more TIM than necessary and the previous owner probably never changed it within the year plus of owning it.

I'm going to replacing the paste first, then, before considering a third party VGA cooler.
