But it won't read the monitor. Which cords would cause this?

Few things.

Make sure you are plugging the video cord into the graphics card's video port and not into the motherboard's video port.

Make sure you connected the PCI-E power cables from your PSU to your graphics card if your graphics card has such plugs.

If that does not work then take the video card out entirely and plug the video cord into the motherboard's video port.

Serious question:

How do you know it is monitor/gpu related? Do you even know if the computer is built properly? Just because it says "no signal" doesn't mean it's monitor related.

Need more info.
You can buy a $500 console and a $500 computer and have two crap machines, or you can spend $1000 building your own computer and have the best of both worlds.
