Looking to upgrade my mom's computer

#1wassup3Posted 10/1/2013 8:14:15 AM
So, my mom is currently using the first computer I have ever built. Most of the peripherals are like... 6 years old at this point and I think it's time for an upgrade for her. I think the video card, power supply, case, SSD, and optical drive should be good enough to continue. I think I'm just going to get motherboard, CPU, and RAM.

I'm probably going to wait until around Black Friday to buy the parts, but since I've been so out of the loop on PC parts, I might turn to you guys on things I should probably keep an eye out for. I'm looking at a 200 dollar budget for the three items. I may throw in some extra money for a touchscreen monitor. Anything you guys can recommend?

Also, the power supply is a 500 Watt Ultra V series and the case can fit ATX in it. The video card is 7600gt, but she doesn't really do anything with it to warrant an upgrade for that.

Looks alright. Is AMD pretty much down the gutter nowadays?

What is the current rig's specs? What does she use it for?

Because she probably doesn't need an upgrade.

Cheaper and better for what your mom would probably be doing. Realistically, though, she doesn't even need an upgrade. This of course depends on what she does with the computer, but if it's what most people use their computer for, she's fine with what she has.

This plus a set of 2x2gb ram should be plenty for a daily-driver. The igp may actually be better than the gpu you have.

Asus P5LD2
Pentium 4 2.6GHz (I think it's a Prescott. I don't think it's a Northwood)
4GB of RAM
7600gt
Ultra Xfinity (probably got the model wrong) 500W
Intel 128GB SSD (Just got this last Christmas)
Some random DVD reader
Antec Super Lanboy case

Mostly used for checking email, webchat with relatives in China, etc... Yea... this will still work, but she has been complaining that it's a little slow.

Try a fresh install of windows that sometimes fixes slowdown on pc's especially if it is an old one.

yes cleanup and install is probably mostly what she needs.
