Trademarks have time limits. 10 years , but have to be renewed every 5th or 6th year.. no point filing a trademark for something that wont exist for a super long time


You trademark it so no one else can use the name. Imagine if, when HL2 was new and it's popularity was at it's height, a different company had released an unconnected game and called it "Half-Life 3" as they knew many (clueless) people would buy the game unseen, thinking it was related to HL2.
