Atmospheric and tense. Quite unique really. Focuses more on melee combat and has a nice supernatural feel about it. Its been a long while since I've played but aside from not having bleeding edge graphics, I think it would hold up just fine now.

A bit clunky at times but it has a lot of good ideas.

A strong atmosphere matched with quite good pacing.

F****** AWESOME GAME.

As said earlier, it's a bit clunky. But that kind of adds to the tension. Sorta.

I'll second everything that's been said. Great overall game, just a little clunky. Does a pretty good job of making it clear that you're close to helpless.

I played it years ago when it was first released and it was good. Great atmosphere. I recently replayed it and it doesn't hold up too well. Graphically, it's not terrible but the combat is one dimensional, the enemies are repetitive and the creepy atmosphere just isn't as creepy as I remember it.

If you never played it it's probably worth it. Just don't expect awesomeness.

It's pretty good. The game does have more melee combat with limited ammo for guns. There are crime scene investigation scenes that could have been done better. It was a game with some cool new ideas overall. The sequel IMO was a lot better, the combat was even more fine tuned, I'm sure the crime scene stuff was done better, and it was a much scarier game.

Personally I feel the opposite - the supernatural/hallucinatory aspects in the sequel were way too forced and kinda killed the horror for me. It was a better game otherwise, though. Shame it was console-only, I had a blast playing the multiplayer, which I'm sure is completely dead by now.

I'm gonna be that guy and say I didn't really care much for it. I was really looking forward to playing it but then I realized the melee combat was really shallow and it just didn't feel good to wack someone. I never played part 2 but it looked like the combat in that game would have suited me more. Cool atmosphere and whatnot though.
