All in all, I would say 4 years with decent enough performance to be able to play newer games.

Just as an example,
I bought the i5-760 in 2010. Back then it was the standard go-to mainstream gaming PC processor that offered a good bang for buck. Like the i5-2500k after it etc. I still have it and have now paired it with a GTX 760, which is about as good of a card that is worth coupling with my aging processor. However, I can still play newer demanding games like the Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3 really well.

The CPU I had before the i5-760 was the Q6600, which I bought in the beginning of 2007 and also lasted me more than 3 years, and when I replaced it it was really not really necessary yet. I remember back then games had just started properly using quad cores.

Do you really need to know ahead of time? It'll be obselete when you're unhappy with your performance.
