Do you have the drive connected with just a normal USB cable? Some drives want a plug that has two USB connectors on it. That way they can pull twice the power to spin up the drive.

I was going to say this too. I have a portable harddrive that looks like that and will not work unless you use the double USB cable to give it more power.
