Is the i3 4130 much slower than i5 for gaming?

It's a dual core vs a quad core. I wouldn't recommend a dual core at this point unless you play exclusively minecraft in which case a Haswell pentium or i3 would be a great choice. A 6300/6350 or i5 will be much better choices looking forward.

Ah... It's because the new systems have 8 cores, and thus games will be optimizing for them.

the 6300/6350 are both a large step down from the i5.

It's 6300/6350 vs an i3 though in that they're comparably priced. Of course the $220 processor is going to outperform the $120 ones.

Fair enough, it's just the way your response is phrased seems to imply that they're comparable, which simply isn't the case.
