How is the HP Pavilion 17-e020dx?

The GPU is really bad, especially for $600.

Reuse an HDD and get something like this. If you don't have another HDD, drop the GPU to a 7850 and get a 1 TB drive for $60.

HP Pavilions are cheaply made...but they can be good. I have 3. One is pushing 10 years with daily use (my young son plays with it) and it's still fine. I use one daily for work as well and have been for 3 years, still runs and boots up like new.

The quality and the price of pre-builts dropped when Windows Vista came out, just to let you know.

Took a shot in the dark with this.

Haven't decided on a hard drive, though I hear these Seagate ones are pretty good as well as sound card. And networking from either Cisco,Belkin,or Netgear. Will all these parts be available on Newegg? It's the only place that accepts paypal.

The case isn't permanent. I want to get either an AZZA Solaris or Armor Chassis Blue.

Ok this is the most bare bones cheapest computer I could put together on newegg with a damn good 7950 video card and it just squeaked under $600.

The first thing I would do is upgrade the CPU from a FX 4100 to an FX 6100 for $20 more if you can afford it.

You gave up way too much in the rest of the computer for that GPU. An FX-4100 will hold it back massively. If you're trying to scrub in an HDD as well, you're best off dropping the GPU to a 7850 or something and opting for an FX-6300 and 8 gigs of ram.

This is actually quite nice. There's absolutely no reason to get Win7 over Win8, though.
