Does Games for Window's Live cost money?

#1chequelotsPosted 10/4/2013 1:07:55 PM
I need to install that to play Arkham Asylum and I don't know if it's gonna cost me just to have save data. I'm new to this PC gaming thing and I don't know if it's gonna cost me a monthly rate or something.

I think it depends on the game. In some games you could have an offline profile and an online profile, and the saves would be completely different (Fallout 3 was like this)....I'd say start playing the game offline and if it refuses to save while you're offline, then yes, you're gonna have to be online to access save data.

That's how it worked for me on Fallout 3... I wound up saying "screw GFWL" and playing the whole game offline which let me save just fine. I didn't get any GFWL achievements while doing this, and I had to start over (since the saves I made online weren't accessible) but I could still play and enjoy the game. Also I think the GFWL saves are encrypted, so you can't transfer them to another computer... This is probably done to prevent people from editing a save file or something to get achievements. Some people take that gamer score seriously.

They should be patching out GFWL in a ton of games that have it in the coming months (since they're shutting it down). If it's that much of a concern, just wait till next year before you buy any games with GFWL (though you'll want to make sure they actually patched it out instead of leaving it useless).

As long as you've signed in once on a computer I think you can go into offline mode and still use your online mode save file. If you do a fresh installation then you won't be able to access your online saves. Also most GFWL saves require extra profile data to be backed in order for you to access them on a new computer. Apparently they did this because they didn't want people hacking the achievements >_>

The main thing Gold Membership allowed you to do is play cross platform with the 2 games that supported this feature.

One more question. I bought this game on amazon used. The game had an activation code in the back of the games instruction manual that I typed in. Was that a good idea or should have gotten another code?
