Skip HL1, (Get the free remake later), buy HL2, and both episodes.

Half-Life 1 is going to be a hard-sell, since it hasn't aged that well. If you want to play Half-Life 1, check out the Black Mesa mod since it makes it more accessible (better graphics and smooths out some of the rough gameplay).

Half-Life 2 is great, and Half-Life 2 Episode 2 is great as well. Episode 1 is good, but fairly linear. I'd still recommend playing Half-Life 2 and both episodes, though -- for the story, if nothing else.

The Episodes are the sequels to HL2. HL1 isn't completely necessary, just read a basic synopsis of it and you'll be ok.

The original version of Half-Life 1 is fantastic. Half-Life 2 was a major disappointment to me, and I don't think I'll ever understand why it wasn't a huge failure. It lacks the challenge and fun of the original, and it wastes a lot of time on bad vehicle segments and physics engine showcases that aren't even slightly impressive now. There's a lot of excitement for Half-Life 3, but as far as I'm concerned we never got a proper sequel to the original game.

The mod is worse in every way except graphics. Its not worse in a "its terrible" way but its inferior regardless.

HL1 has good gameplay and amazing atmosphere regardless of "when" you play it.

HL1 blows HL2 out of the water in almost all aspect, I also agree with that. HL2 is only fun and unique to me in its immersion factor. I don't get engrossed in any other game like I do in the HL2 games, even though they have a lot of flaws. (they're still miles better than modern FPS anyway).

Agreed. HL1 is better than HL2 and has way more re playability. The expansions for it (Op4 and Blue-Shift) are great too. But HL2 is still better than basically every other shooter that has come out since.

You say that Black Mesa is "worse" but I still think it's a great game. I prefer to think of it as an alternate universe or something. The game is different enough from the original that you can play through both and get a different experience from each.

HL1 is amazing. Anyone who tells you to skip it is a dumbass. Play the original, then play the mod when you feel like replaying it.

I feel like tons of people who recommend Black Mesa over HL1 haven't played Black Mesa.

Black Mesa is great, but it's not even finished yet. There's a huge chunk of the game cut out. It's not just a graphical overhaul either.
