What should I play? (Old RPGs)

#1I_am_CrimboPosted 10/6/2013 4:49:32 PM
For awhile now I've been building up a backlog of old RPGs but I'm not quite sure where to start. All of these I have never played before as I've been mostly a console player (ahh! don't hurt me!). Which order should I play these?

Baldur's Gate 1 and 2
Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2
Wizardry 6,7 and 8
Ultima 1-9 (I've heard its safe to skip at least 1-3)
Ultima Underworld 1 and 2
Fallout 1,2 (and tactics)
Planescape Torment
Icewind Dale 1 and 2
the other DnD games from GoG
Septerra Core
Anachronox
Arcanum
Gothic series
Sacred series
and pretty much all the Spiderweb software games.

Thanks for the help oh glorious PC board.

Fallout 1 and 2 first, then Planescape: Torment, then Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

Here are the top tier "cRPGs" and the order in which I'd approach them:

Fallout
Fallout 2
Arcanum
---
Baldur's Gate and Tales of the Sword Coast
Baldur's Gate 2 and Throne of Bhaal
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale
Icewind Dale 2
Neverwinter Nights (OC, Shadows of Undrentide, Hordes of the Underdark)
Neverwinter Nights 2 (OC, Mask of the Betrayer, Storm of Zehir, Mysteries of Westgate)
Temple of Elemental Evil
---
Jagged Alliance 2
Silent Storm

The reasoning for the order of the second section is that you're following the progression of the ruleset which is much less confusing (AD&D2 -> D&D3 -> D&D3.5) and the evolution of the engines (Infinity, Aurora, Elektron) and it's mostly inline with release chronology

The others on your list are more common sense to approach, but I personally wouldn't delve deeply into Ultima or Wizardry as they've aged awfully (UVII, Underworld and W8 are great, though).

Spiderweb games I'd avoid like the plague, they seem to be made for MacOS "gamers".

Wouldn't bother with Sacred, Anachronox or Septerra, they are as nothing in the face of my tier list.

Gothic series order is obvious, don't skimp on 1 and play the 3rd with the Commpatch.

Also consider these:

System Shock 2 (better than BioSlack)
Deus Ex (prob best game ever)
Divine Divinity (underrated, across between BG and Diablo)
Vampire Bloodlines (awesome)
Alpha Protocol
Morrowind (yawn)
KotOR series
Dragon Age: Origins (modded)
Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor (D&D3.0 game, play after IWD2)
Drakensang

Oldskool:

Wasteland
Darklands
Dark Sun
Betrayal at Krondor (prob the best written RPG ever)

should also say the order doesn't matter all that much, i wouldn't agonize over it. i knew a guy once who read hard sci-fi series' in the order in which he found them in 2nd hand bookstores. He still understood everything about Dune, Foundation etc.

But that is exactly what is going on: being agonized by the choice.
I enjoyed the story and setting in Fallout 3/NV, and understanding the differences in gameplay between the new and old, I think I'll start with Fallout then. Thanks for the input guys.

Ignore everything from the story of 3 while playing 1 and 2 because it really has almost nothing to do with it and play 1 before 2.

that and it's a poor man's slurry of 1 & 2's story

imo, would definitely kick off with those, Arcanum, and Torment, then to Ultima/UU and BG 1/2
