Why do running servers cost?

#1IcyFlamez96Posted 10/6/2013 5:16:58 PM
Is it because someone on one end has to monitor it? Or does running them use up tangible resources or something?

Because servers aren't free to build and maintain. Also a business is entitled to make a profit.

Electricity isn't free too and permanently running HDDs don't run forever.

even assuming bandwidth is an unlimited resource, youve got

the hardware
the electricity
the maintenance
the cost of the building its located in

etc etc

Servers consume electricity.
They are typically kept in a data center with a massive air conditioning system that doesn't just sip electricity either.
Then you have to pay for the hardware.
Then you have all this network infrastructure supporting the servers. Gotta pay for that.
Then you have people connecting to those servers over the Internet, using up limited bandwidth.
Then you need people watching over that entire facility. If you own that facility, you probably pay taxes on it. If you don't own the facility, well someone else does, and you gotta pay them.
Then you have to make sure that those servers are operating fine, that all the infrastructure supporting them is operating fine (whether it's the network or a hypothetical SAN if the servers are not using dedicated DAS), so you have to have skilled professionals doing that because you can't just let the janitor do it.
