As with most rouge-like/randomized dungeon games: I desperately WANT to like it, but I'm so put off by how quickly and often the randomizer will 100% screw you over that I just can't appreciate it.
As others have mentioned...It's the sort of genre that skill can only take you so far. You can be an expert at the game, but if you go 5-10 levels and never see food or bullets, and then get swarmed by high-level/unusually tough enemies, you're SOL. No amount of skill will make your knife magically win, or keep you from starving.
I had one run where I was doing amazingly well---Had TONS of bullets, a half dozen repair kits for just about everything, some really nice weapons---And most importantly: Power Armor that made me neigh immune to damage from majority of enemies. I was doing pretty damn good--Even hadn't been d***ed over by machine hacks or traps.
How did it end? I went the better 3/4ths of my run and never found food. I found a couple bits of bread and a ration near the end, but all the power armor and bullets in the world aren't going to prevent starvation. I could loot anything I wanted just about, so if there WAS food, I wouldn't have had an issue getting it. There just simply wasn't any.
do you guys like it better barebones? or with the DLC? i dunno if i like all these powers
I heard the game is a lot harder with the DLC, and once you buy it, you can't revert back if the difficulty is too much. I don't have the DLC myself. Not keen on making it harder.
I agree that the game can really screw you over. I've never been able to craft anything due to never finding all the items I needed, and you could go several floors without ever finding one scrap of food. It's still a fun game though, but the RNG is pretty out of whack.
