I was going to say he's probably thinking of the old radeon 9xxx series.

there might be a problem with doing that. some dell models use proprietary things like front panel connections and non standard motherboard mounting holes and may not fit in a non dell case without modification.

lol

This reminds me when my friend's parents bought him a "gaming PC" for Christmas that they got from Staples... of course they didn't know anything about computers and got taken for a ride. It barely ran Counterstrike (this was after it had been out for about a year). They got upset because in their mind having a computer = all futuristic so it had to run just about anything. Long story short they realized that being poor sucks because you get what they pay for and they'd never be able to keep up with current trends. They took the computer back and my friend didn't get anything for Christmas because of all the frustration/tension it caused between him and his parents (just from realizing how poor, naive and ****ed their lives were).

tl;dr Tell your friend to take that money and invest it in education and hope it lands him a decent job down the line, so "tight budget" isn't even in his vocabulary (though he could go post-secondary and get screwed anyway, but it's better than not trying and living in poverty forever).

I probably shouldn't, but I laughed quite a bit. Probably because I have seen similar situations before.

Nah, it's cruel, but it's funny. He went on to have four kids (first kid@17), his wife is a stay-at-home-cow, he works two jobs and is on government assistance (so basically nothing he owns is really his, anyway - just being kept on life-support by the system so he can get his kids to 18 and release them into the wild as slaves to be milked by those of us who didn't get as ****ed in life). Poor people are helpless and hopeless and are completely unable to retaliate, no reason not to laugh.

Yep... I warned him about the girl he was with, too. So did a few of the other guys in our group... it was an "accident". She "forgot" to take her pill, got pregnant, refused to get an abortion, her family (and his because they're idiots) guilt tripped him into marrying her, and his life went into a steep decline and hasn't stopped going downhill ever since.

Moral of the story: There are more important things to look after for self than getting a budget gaming PC *now*, which is lulzy in itself anyway.

Is that one of those quiet dells with a crap power supply and no air flow?

If so, don't for the love of god use a 9600.
I have one, it can easily cook eggs at its running temperature of 90C and its also very power hungry.

And my case has very good ventilation, there is nothing wrong with the card, it's been cooking eggs since 2008 without issue.
