The Dark Mod 2.0 (Thief inspired mod for Doom 3) standalone game released today.

80/80

I just found out about this mod today. I know I'm late to the party and this may be really old news for most of you, but for any old-school Thief fans out there who may not have owned Doom 3 (and therefore never knew about its mods), or it just plain flew over your head, get ready to play Thief as you knew and loved it, but with better graphics.

It's called The Dark Mod, and with the release of 2.0 today, you don't need Doom 3 to play it anymore. The official site is www.thedarkmod.com (however, due to the release of 2.0 today, the servers are completely clogged). A mod over at forums.darkmod.com has uploaded the standalone game to his Google account so it can be downloaded faster (it's about 2.5 GB):

Also, if you already have Doom 3, you can download the mod via an update at these mirrors:

The game is amazing. The team put together the most authentic Thief game anyone could hope for (much more authentic then what the new Thief looks to be shaping up to be). There's not a campaign per se, but you can download user-created missions (and from what I understand there are some mini-campaigns available for download).

The initial game comes with a tutorial and a church mission. I'm playing through the tutorial and am amazed that the game is as good as it is. Again, it's still very much old-school Thief, so it may not be for everyone. But it's all about stealth, the combat is difficult (as it should be), it looks great, and the nostalgia effect is through the roof.

Check it out. These kind of mods and standalones are why we're PC gamers after all.

Few people left here that are actual "PC Gamers" to appreciate this. This looks quite impressive for a Doom 3 mod. Don't even know how that engine gets weird stuff like that done on it. Definitely looks a lot more like a Thief game than the upcoming Thief.

I'll definitely have to give that one a try.

Wasn't the Id tech 4 engine's source code released? I'd imagine with enough modifications it could get anything done.

Great timing! I just finished replaying the original Thief this evening. I had forgotten how engrossing and how much fun the game is, despite its flaws.

Will definitely be checking this out over the weekend.

I wish I could get Thief 2/3 to work on my machine...apparently there are issues with running it from Steam on modern stuff.
