I have a ATX motherboard. It's pretty average being in the middle of the big ones and the small ones. How big is your motherboard?

Sometimes that's all you need. I do fine with an i3. By the time I NEED to upgrade, we'll likely be on hexa-core or octo-core CPUs.

I have a Z77 Extreme4 which is ATX but not as wide as other ATX boards I've used. Annoys me since the RAM slots are too close to my heatsink and I was dumb enough to get RAM with tall heatsinks.

I've got a micro atx motherboard but not because I needed it for any reason... If I could go back and buy another motherboard I probably would pick a regular ATX board.

I've never seen a reason to prefer a smaller formfactor than ATX with a full size case.
