What exactly are the rules regarding emulation discussion?

I believe it becomes illegal when you distribute copyrighted material. In other words, emulators are legal, but the copyrighted content people access with them isn't, at least until it becomes public domain (which I believe takes 75 years for anything, not 100% sure on that time.)

I heard it was 90 years for video games.

So in 2070 we'll be able to freely download Pac-Man!

The tricky part is getting the BIOS from a console you own, and the ROM from a game you own.
My favorite thing about PCSX is that I can run it without an actual Playstation BIOS and use my actual discs.

IMO, emulation = piracy.

I've said it before; you just don't buy a game to emulate. You download games to emulate. People say otherwise are lying their ass off.

Except it's not. A lot of times it's just easier to emulate a game I already own and play it on my PC than get out an ancient game console and fight trying to get it to work while using a terrible controller. I don't see how it is piracy if you already own the game and just want to play it on a different medium

Well, technically the mods are in the right. Nearly nobody flashes their own console bios. I'd say there's less than a hundred people who do that in the entire world. So basically, anyone talking about emulators that use bios is emulating illegally. Anyone who claims otherwise is most likely lying.

It is still piracy because you downloading someone elses copy and not ripping your own.

Except, you know, for convenience and better resolutions.
But especially convenience.

It's only more convenient if you download. It's a pain in the ass to create your own clean rip.

What? No it's not. Its takes a handful of mouse clicks and then just waiting it out for a few minutes while dropping a deuce or something.

Last time I tried to piece together what to actually do I ended up in a circular logic path.

Basically you have to dump your own BIOS from your system. Then it is legal.

However I was not able to get an answer from this board on how to do THAT legally. There was a post or two but the mods deleted the whole thread before I could read them because of things one or two people were saying.
And google doesn't help.

Depending upon the system it might not be possible or legal.

I don't know what GameFAQs thinks of PCSX-R and it's reverse engineered bios.
