what would be the nvidea equivalent to a 7970 or a 7950? my brother is upgrading but sadly, I have no idea about them. I think the 760 would be the closest one, but someone correct me if I am mistaken.

770 if you factor in overclocking.

so a 780 is the equivalent of a 7970? Might as well have him stick with amd then.

What? No where close. The 7970 is a bit faster than the 770 at max overclocks, the 780 walks all over it.

Walks all over it is a bit of a stretch. While it does beat it in most benchmarks, it's too close in many of them for the 780 to retain any dignity when you factor in that it costs over twice as much.

A regular 7970 matches up against a gtx 760. The 7970 GHz edition matches up against a gtx 770 best. These are comparably priced as well. The gtx 780 is significantly more powerful than a 7970 GHz, though it's almost twice the price and the performance increase doesn't match up with the price increase.

The 7970 GHz should be going cheap by the end of the month with the release of the R9 280X which offers very little benefit over its predecessor. The value/performance ratio of the 7970 GHz is outstanding. Then again, nvidia's next gen (Maxwell) 800 series is scheduled next year...

But AMD's next next line is slated to release in 2 years. Might as well wait.
But then nVidia's next next line is launching in 3 years. Might as well wait.
But AMD's next next next line is going to be coming out in 4 years. Might as well wait.

This is how you sound telling people to wait for hardware coming out in the future.

I'm sorry but yes while the 7970 has much better price to performance to even think that it comes close to a 780 while both are overclocked has got to be joking, maybe f you consider 20-30% faster close.
