If it's your first time, going with standard weapons will probably be your best bet - there's less room for error. Then experiment with other stuff in another play through if you enjoyed it enough the first go.

Hacking is the only must-have skill. Everything else is optional.

By the time you realize what you did wrong in your first playthrough it'll be too late to fix it. Just roll with it and adjust choices next game.

There's an official patch out there somewhere that will allow you to tweak the rate at which weapons wear out. Considering how fast they break in the vanilla version, I highly recommend it... just don't turn it off altogether otherwise it makes the game too easy.

Oh also don't be afraid to spend spend spend on ammo. It's really hard to FUBAR a playthrough if you have good weapons skills and buy plenty of ammo. (Also, repair would be a good skill to have if you're going to being using weapons a lot.)
