Sell me on Steam

#1MajesticFerretPosted 10/13/2013 1:03:34 PM
Not an avid PC gamer, weighing the options between upgrading my PC or getting a new console.

I hear pretty glorious things about Steam and how much you can save. Curious in hearing some of the deals people have got. I guess just post some games, what price you got them at, and how close to release you got them. Others positives and negatives of the service can be expressed as well.

Thanks

from another post i made:
http://www.ea.com/news/humble-origin-bundle-results

With a retail price of $240, the Humble Origin Bundle quickly became the biggest selling bundle in Humble Bundle history, reaching over 1 million bundles sold in just under 36 hours. Once you paid what you wanted, you could select how much to donate to each charity as well as Humble Bundle from their total donation. Any dollar amount would unlock six EA games – Dead Space, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Crysis 2, Mirror’s Edge, Dead Space 3, and Medal of Honor. If youpaid more than the average price at their time of purchase, you could unlock four additional games: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Uprising, Battlefield 3, Populous and The Sims 3.

i paid $10(but could have chosen $5~ or so which was the beat the average price).

sleeping dogs, hitman: A, tomb raider = $14(and TR only came out little over half a year ago).

edit: to be fair some of those humblebundle games were origin only but since that's part of PC gaming in general it still counts.

PC hardware doesn't need to match console hardware in price when PC gamers save literal thousands from the software they buy. http://www.steamgamesales.com/

Steam is great. There are frequently 50-75% off sales, free game weekends, holidays sales, and third-party bundles. The best sales of the year from Steam itself are usually the Steam Winter and Summer sales, where most games are available at one time or another for 75-85% off. You can regularly get bundles of games which sometimes include Steam keys from websites such as https://www.humblebundle.com/.

The most recent and amazing deals I have seen include Mafia II & Civilization V for free from GMG (just had to vote in the golden joysticks awards) and the Humble Origin Bundle which included Dead Space, Dead Space 3, Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box, Crysis 2 Ultimate Edition, Mirror's Edge, and Medal of Honor for $1 and Battlefield 3, The Sims 3, Populous and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 if you beat the average (I think it was around $6-$8?). Not only that, but you got Steam Keys and Origin Keys, so you really got 2 copies of each game. Some games could be activated on Origin using their Steam Keys as well, which equates to 3 copies of some games.

Btw, here are a few good resources for finding the best deals:

Steam is the program you use to activate your amazon and GMG games and have it in one location

Those are pretty good deals.

Is there any immediate discount for day 1 purchases?

For example, we'll use BF4. How much would a game like that run on steam new at launch, and how quick do games typically price drop and by how much?

BF4 isnt on steam, that's on origin.
And at GMG, i think it's $48 for pre-order

Nobody cares.

You can buy a $500 console and a $500 computer and have two crap machines, or you can spend $1000 building your own computer and have the best of both worlds.

Brand new AAA games typically go for the standard price of $50-$60. However, games typically drop in price quicker and have more sales on PC. For example, during the Steam Summer sale, I got the entire Tomb Raider collection (10 games) for $17.49, including Tomb Raider (2013). According to GameSpot, that game was released in ~March of 2013 and the Summer sale was months ago.

Depends on the game, some websites and games have pre-order discounts (got about 3$ off the wolf among us this week for example) That being said a lot of pc games start 10$ cheaper than their console equivalent.

But seriously if you need any convincing just go look st the steam homepage, there's a ton of stuff on sale this weekend since capcom is doing a publisher sale.
