New to MOBAs, start with LoL or DoTA2?

#1GeminiX7Posted 10/14/2013 12:24:21 PM
I'm interested in getting into MOBAs as a casual player(I'm still researching and practicing so I'm at least competent at the genre - I hear people take it VERY seriously online). Right now I have DoTA2 downloaded because I found it free on Steam. I played through the tutorials(up to the second one on Mid Lane Defense) and found the game interesting albeit a bit daunting with all the items and stuff to deal with. After looking it up though, I found out that League of Legends is also free, so I was wondering which people think I should play first. Which has a larger fanbase, which is more welcoming to new players? What are the big differences between the two games?

Care to elaborate how? Greater in what way? I'm extremely new to the genre, not really paying any attention to it up until I got my new laptop three days ago and had something that could run newer titles. I only really understand the basics, played a tutorial or three, and read a few guides.

Just play DotA. Everything's unlocked from the start, as it should be.

In LoL it would take over 100 days of playtime just to unlock every champion.

Dota has a higher learning curve, but you don't have to pay to unlock heroes and can even make money from the game by selling in-game items.

Play LoL.

DotA2 uses an old formula that started the genre, LoL takes some of the tedium out of a 10 year old formula.

I played the hell out DotA back in the day, was hard to get into LoL at first but ended up liking it so much more. Then DotA 2 came out, was super excited... I tried to get into it but it just just felt like a step backwards.

Then there is the community... both communities suck but imo LoLs is tons better than DotA2s.

Do you prefer pay to win? If not, DOTA2.
