The exploration and building is more shallow.

The combat and loot progression is deeper.

it's more of a "metroid roguelike" than anything else, but with mandatory permadeath exchanged for a very lengthy playtime for a single world

Then you simply haven't been following Minecraft. Both games have been adding a lot to their creation aspects, and Minecraft has simply maintained its lead.

On the other hand, I suppose that Terraria has beaten Minecraft at exploration...but it's been better than Minecraft with that since beta, really. Exploration and combat are Terraria's main draws, construction is Minecraft's.
