So I'm looking for a free video converter. I tried Freemake's one, but it pissed me off beyond belief when it installed a ton of extra s*** on my laptop despite doing a custom installation and telling it not to. Plus, it adds a 2-3 second "Freemake" flash-screen at the end of every video it converts. Annoying.

So... rather than experiment a million times with all the ones out there, I figured I'd ask yall. What do you use? Do you like it? Is there anything I should look into that's really cheap instead of free?

Thanks.

If you just want to change the container without transcoding, I think you can do this with Avidemux.

Basically, my TV doesn't like MKVs. It'll play AVIs, MP4s, and basically everything else streamed to it (via Windows "Play To" streaming w/ WMP), except MKVs.

I use Freemake, which can also convert basically everything else and compresses files as well.

I haven't used it in forever so I can't say if they've added a ton of unnecessary crap that wasn't there before but DVDVideoSoft Free Studio is a pretty solid set of software. No ads aside from some toolbars in the installer that you can opt out of and if you do the full install you get a pretty big set of options to choose from, video converters, disc burners, some audio stuff, a video converter specifically designed to convert video to mobile devices (iPhone, iPod classic, PSP, and tablets).

Like I said, it's been a while since I used it but once upon a time it was good stuff.
Every time I try to go where I really wanna be it's already where I am, 'cuz I'm already there

Mkv and mp4 are containers. You have to check what kind of encoding it can handle

I am also looking for a video converter but I want to convert some files (avi) to mpeg-4. I got handbrake but that converts to mp4 and my picture frame doesn't support that.
