Do you currently have Windows 8? - I had.
Do you enjoy using it, and more specifically enjoy PC gaming on it? - I did enjoy it, yes.
Have you tried the preview of Windows 8.1 yet? - Nope.
Will you be upgrading your Windows 8 PC to 8.1 once its released on the 18th? - Already done, and liking it better so far. :)

Looks like KMS activated installations can't get Windows 8.1 from the store, which is what I have I think.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/why-can-t-find-update-store

If this is true, how would a KMS activation of Windows 8 upgrade to 8.1?

You should probably check with your IT. The 8.1 update will probably have to be manually rolled out by them. Probably to prevent devices from updating before they can confirm complete compatibility with all company/organization required software/hardware.

I changed my OS to just a regular copy of Windows 8 and I still don't see 8.1 in the store.

Not only this, but my Windows Defender isn't working.

I just unsuccessfully tried to install Windows 8.1, it updated fine and then it came to a blank, black screen. I waited like this for 4 hours, and nothing, and my battery run out. I didnt even notice the charger got unplugged somewhere along the line. Anyway, when I charged it and restarted it, it came to a black screen, now with a cursor on it, and it came to a system restore screen, where I allowed it to roll back to the last known working point, which should have been before I updated. That came to a screen with only the Windows logo and a black screen other than that. That hung, so I restarted and tried to do it once more, and it brought me to a BSOD, and restarted me again, starting a loop of restarts, citing a BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG error. So I went to the boot settings from the boot up menu, and tried a system restore from there. Then, it told me there was no operating system installed and cancelled it, taking me back to the windows logo hang screen. Im stumped, nothing on the internet is helping, but Ive had this laptop for 3 years and it fits all the requirements for 8.1. Just wanna spread the sad news. Microsoft are a bunch of turkeys, every launch they have something like this and every launch they break something.

Update: I just tried another roll back and it worked. Its back to regular 8, and Im not updating again anytime soon, but it could have broken mine. Ive also read the same error, but unfixable on Asus.

My mistakes were updating to the latest version with all the system requirements? And I was more helping to warn others.

And losing power during said update had nothing to do with it?

Do you know why there are warnings to NOT turn off the system / power during an update and this applies to most electronics.

Your issues have ENTIRELY to do with your battery going dead during the update and have nothing to do with Windows 8.1 itself.

Not when the screen was black for 4 HOURS before it shut off. An update of any kind shouldn't take that long. Hell, my install to Windows 8 in the first place took 2 hours all up, including the download time. And this update was only 3.63 GB, the Windows 8 one was much bigger.

And it's not just me going through this type of thing Windows 8.1 either: http://www.itwire.com/your-it-news/home-it/61951-windows-81-update-fail

So you can change it by editing some files? Well, at least it sounds like it's possible that someone will make a program to automate that.

I watched an interview with a Microsoft dev and they basically took several minutes to explain that you couldn't change the colors, but they were taking it into consideration for the next version of Windows.

My whole regret is that I should have known better before attempting to update, but "ooh, new shiny" took over. I should have made a more current back up as well.

Microsoft have now acknowledged there are problems with the update. Big ones. And they've been there since the preview in June. My fault though, isn't it? How could I be so stupid as to update?
