Please recommend me a graphics card to replace my Nvidia 8800GT

Spec:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.6ghz
4GB RAM
Corsair 520w modular PSU
Asus P5k-E motherboard (Intel LGA775 / P35 )

Every now and again my pc turns on but no picture displays (and graphics card fan stays on 100% - usually it goes to max for a few seconds then down).

Yesterday my PC froze on the screensaver (but seemed to be working fine)

Any advice for this? Preferably cheaper the better as it's a 2008 build PC..

And also would like better performance than the 8800GT which has served me well so far ^_^

If you're not going to be buying any other new hardware for a long time and really don't want to spend much, I would just get the cheapest AMD HD 7770 you can find.

Ye a HD 7750/7750 should be ok for that PC. I wouldn't go any higher with that CPU.

If you want a CPU upgrade, you could probably find a cheap Core 2 Quad. The C2Q has aged, but it would allow you to play modern games decently.

This - as long as you don't go TOO high-end so you'll be bottlenecked by that core 2 duo, just about anything is going to be a sizeable upgrade (funny, I remember when the 8800 was declared the "fastest GPU ever" or something like that around 2006, now it's typically the minimum requirement for a game. how times change).
