True. Sorry I'm not perfect about PC jargon, hence why I even have a laptop.
Not a problem. Just trying to educate.

For what I have on my laptop, reformatting it wasn't an option. I've got too much stuff on here to do that. It would have taken years to recover everything.
Sounds like it's time for you to obtain some form of backup.

Yeah, I've been meaning to get an external Hard Drive for storage and backup for a while, just never got around to it. I've got all my music and save files, as well as important documents saved onto a 32 GB SD Card for now, but it's not ideal.

I'm so glad I decided to pick up a new external HDD to back my computer up today. Used some gift cards to pick one up and thank god...tried updating to Windows 8.1 when I finished with the update and it failed to update and failed to restoring the previous version of Windows.

I've been installing 8.1 on laptops here at work since the RTM and not one of them has been "bricked" because of it. These are mostly HP laptop's and desktops, with a few Lenovo's thrown in there as well.

I actually just updated one of our previous W8 laptops to W8.1 a few minutes ago. No problems at all.

Yeah but it's still bricking some laptops. I got lucky with mine, I've seen some stories about some computers being so messed up they won't even get to the BIOS menu.

just pointing something out here

win8.1 wouldn't effect the bios. at all. screwed up MBR? totally possible. but it won't touch the bios.

So the moral of the story is... never be the first user of a new software / major update.

I'm looking at you, Rome II. And Win 8.1 But mostly Rome II.

I been having issues with the install...on my new computer with ASUS motherboard...it freezes during restart and reverts to windows 8 automatically...and my wife HP envy 1414 installs all the way but runs horribly....the video drivers disappear and wont install the new drivers and the control panel freezes and exits automatically when i click into it. I had to do reinstall win 8 and lose all my programs....

Blah, mine failed as well. Going back to 8 as well.

Install went smoothly on my samsung series 5 laptop. I'll have to re tweak some settings though as my startup, services, and scheduled tasks seem to have been changed. Not a big deal though.
