AMD's R9 290X smashes the GTX 780 in "uber mode"

#1Snuckie7Posted 10/18/2013 4:26:44 AM
So apparently all the leaked benches so far had the 290X running on the "quiet mode" BIOS. With the BIOS set to performance though, the gap between the 290X and the 780 widens.

If true that is great news. This will heat up the competition between the companies.

Not bad, although I will wait for a few more reviews. This happens every gen, they stagger these releases, hard to compare direct 1:1. It isn't like the 780 and 290x came out at the exact same time. 7xx series came and destroyed AMD 7 series, amd 290 comes out, Nvidia lowers prices, Nvidia comes out with a refresh of 7xx, then AMD comes out with a new series. It goes back and forth. I just don't recommend buying right at release, about 2 months is good, the MSRP will drop.

You can buy a $500 console and a $500 computer and have two crap machines, or you can spend $1000 building your own computer and have the best of both worlds.

So it is still only as fast as a Titan?

The stock 780 has 30-40% stable OC headroom to begin with and uses a lot less power (apparently) than the 290X which could indicate the 290x is on the high side of it's power limitations.

I'm guessing it will be trading blows with a factory OC 780.

I wouldn't call an average of 5FPS in most games "smashing" considering the 780 is going to be older...

Considering the difference in launch times, this 'smashing' is a little underwhelming.

Side question though, what is it about Bioshock Infinite that's so hard to run? Are they just cranking up the AA in that game or something? Metro Last Light runs better at 4k for crying out loud.

i'd like to see these magical 780s that OC 40 percent, as far as i know the only 780 that gets close to that is the evga classified...
