Why does the term for 1440p has the word wide in it?

Is it implying it's more wide than any other res?

Because there are HD resolutions that aren't considered wide. A picture with a resolution of 10000x10000 is HD, but it's square.

There's also ultra-wide resolutions, like 21:9. Past that, there's stuff like panoramic pictures.

Right, i was trying to compare it to "Full HD", 1080p
which is 16:9
1440p is also 16:9
why isnt 1080p called Wide Full HD then?

1440p is called both QHD and WQHD. I guess people can't agree on one term. There are other uncommon 16:9 resolutions that are called "W____". 1080p is much more common, so I guess one term caught on and people stuck with it.
