Your on laptop could be a loose connector inside the screen.

Screen tear I think is the term.

Enabling vyscnc eradicates it. 30hz vsync for 30FPS, 60hz for 60 FPS.

yeah, it's "screen tearing" and it's fixed by using Vsync (though that can introduce some mouse lag) or you can reduce the effects of the tearing by capping the framerate (not the same as Vsync).

1)Screen Tearing : turn on VSync in the game's graphics menu.

2) Nausea: This game uses a very low Field of View (FOV) to give you a claustrophobic experience in small, dark, restrictive areas. I think it adds to the charm of the game, but it is hard to adapt to.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/metro-2033-launcher

Use this launcher to set the FOV to around 60.
If you want to do it manually, here's the procedure.

FYI settings are saved in user.cfg files in two distinct locations:
1) C:\Users\\AppData\Local\4A Games\Metro 2033\ (or in WinXP: C:\Documents and settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\4A Games\Metro 2033\)
2) C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\\43110\remote\
Any manual edit must be done in both user.cfg files to take effect.

Ctrl+F to search for "sick_fov". change this value to 60 or 65 to give you a much wider camera.

That should alleviate your problems and help you enjoy this fantastic game. :)

(edit: As a final note, if you're using an AMD video card, please disable Advanced PhysX and keep your Quality High+, textures high+, and Tesselation Normal+. You'll gain FPS while retaining graphics quality.
