Whats so good about Planescape: Torment?

Besides "What can change the nature of a man?"

Graphics-wise. I dont mind. I've been heavily playing indies lately and graphics dont mean s*** to me.

This game seems very text heavy which is kinda off putting since I'm already trying to burn though A Song of Fire and Ice...so more reading, i dont know, its going to have to be epic story-wise at this point.

It seems a lot of people praise this game mainly for the story? What about gameplay? What about combat mechanics? What about customization depth?

I know nothing about this game plot-wise and I think it would be better going into this game blind.

If you're put off by the reading then uninstall right away.

unless the plot is really hooking and all the text has depth and heavily compliments the plot i wont mind all the reading. If its just alot of text for the sake of having a lot of text, then yeah that's a no-go.

being highly optimistic about this game considering its praise but wanted some more opinions coz right now its either this or some discounted DLC for Civ V..

yes

What about gameplay?

it consists of dialogue selections, questing, gaining memories and abilities, recruiting interesting companions, equipping yourself and them wisely, and kicking ass in combat

but combat is the weakest point of the game, if you want good combat try the other A/D&D games

What about combat mechanics? What about customization depth?

combat isn't as tactical as other IE games, or as fun. but it is passable. char customization isn't as complex or as free (for plot reasons), but there's enough to keep it interesting (memories, abilities, the protagonist receives epic bonuses that don't stick to A/D&D rules).

protip: a high intelligence and wisdom makes the game infinitely more interesting, playing as a mage is recommended

I'd say it's worth it. Be thorough, speak to literally everyone. I hope you have high wisdom and int.

It's the best story I've seen in a video game. It's also very non-linear, with you being able to skip huge sections of the game entirely and your stats having a pretty big influence on what happens.

Graphics wise, Torment is actually not bad. Its 2D is very well-drawn, so it looks quite good with a high-res mod.

The game isn't about how many people you can stab. It's a character story. The big appeal is how much input the player has over the story and that it does cover the full advanced D&D alignment. You can actually play lawful neutral if you wanted to, what game gives you the option to role play like that? With games using full voice acting and high detail 3D graphics, you won't see many games of that depth anymore. You can only record so many responses to one statement and vivid novel like descriptions are lost in a HD 3D game. There is the Kickstarter Torment project that's going old school again but so much is lost upon modern innovation, you have to make a 90's style game to capture everything the original has.

Fully voiced RPGs shouldn't be standard
