Can I dual monitor with only 1 VGA port?

#1XxTwisted26xXPosted 10/25/2013 12:22:22 PM
Im trying to connect multiple displays to the computers at work, but the PCs are DELL Optiplex 780s with only 1 VGA port. Is there a way to get them to dual monitor besides installing a new GPU (I dont even think you can haha these PCs are tiny).

a splitter will only let you duplicate the display. you can try a USB-VGA adapter if you don't want to go the GPU route.

Can you not use the DisplayPort port?

Also, unless you have the USFF chassis, you can install an additional video card, just make sure it's low-profile. The tower, desktop and SFF chassis all support adding a video card.

As Shud said, unless you are working with the Ultra Small model, you can use a low profile card. These are pretty cheap on Newegg right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127557
That's that sort of thing you'll need if you do decide to go the graphics card route. Just make sure it comes with the low profile bracket.

Well, now you know there's another type and it's called DisplayPort.
It can have two different types of connectors, but the one I expect you will find on your computer looks like this:

(The other kind looks like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Mini_DisplayPort_on_Apple_MacBook.jpg)

According to the Googles the Optiplex 780 does have a displayport output. You should be good to go as long as you have a monitor with a displayport input.

Ah the input has to be a displayport? Dang, I was thinking the input could be VGA or DVI, with output being displayport. I think the tech said he bought two external VGA outputs (like he described them as plugging this external device into the single VGA output in the desktop, allowing you to have now two VGA outputs).

Displayport typically works with a small adapter cable to convert it to HDMI or DVI.
