Will an Apple computer perform better than a similarly-spec'd PC?

Now before you blow up at me I have a pretty good (I think) reason for questioning this. As you already know, Windows is made to work on just about any hardware (whiten reason) as long as there are drivers available, while OSX only has a few different types of hardware it needs to work on. Do you think OSX may have an advantage considering it was specifically made for the hardware it's running on? I don't think this is that far-fetched of an observation considering game consoles work the same way.

Also, can we please keep this form turning into some kind of flame war?

So you're pretty much asking if OSX is more optimized than 7/8?

No.

I think you're mistaking OSX for something like iOS.

Not really, not when doing a true 1 to 1 comparison between equivalent models. It's just that the equivalent models tend to be kind of niche.

No, I think the same thing could apply to both.

No. Apple adds around 15-20% on almost all components compared to companies like Dell or HP/Compaq, and you can build an identical system to a Mac with either company.

As far as performance goes, OSX is no more optimized than Windows.

OS X is actually built on top of BSD Unix, which, like Windows, is built to run on anything.
Apple didn't develop OS X from the ground up, so it's really not comparable to something like iOS optimization wise.

You're quite mistaken. There have been many times speccing out workstations where the Mac Pro was the cheapest option between the major retailers for equivalent hardware.
