Max number of GPUs possible in a rig

How many GPUs can be used in the same computer? I've been wondering since the new AMD cards came out. I can't decide if four R9 290 (if 4 is possible) or two R9 290X would result in better performance. This is assuming that all the other variables are the same, obviously.

4. Though Nvidia has AMD beat, here, since you can use your 4th card for PhysX, since 4-way scaling is atrocious.

Once we perfect building Mechs, I expect there to be a factory in Mexico pumping out a brand call Mechsican. I wanna buy me a Mechsican.

I wouldn't trust CF.

Ahh, got it. Is a dedicated PhysX card going to be a preferred set up in the future? I know The Witcher 3 recommends that. Do any others?

Dedicated PhysX is getting less important as the cards get stronger, actually. It's just that your 4th card in Crossfire or SLI does pretty much nothing.

As many as you can fit on your motherboard, but CF/SLI only go up to 4, and there's not much point going beyond 3, or even 2 tbh.
Also, multi-gpu setups are problematic. Single GPU is always going to be more stable and reliable.

Do you mean to ask "How many GPUs can be used in Crossfire/SLI" or simply "How many GPUs can be used in an entire system?"

I meant more along the lines of the number of GPUs in Crossfire/SLI.

People are guessing this is the recommended set up if you don't have two equal cards to run in SLI. So get a weaker card for PhysX and use the stronger one to run the game
