Will GFWL games still be playable post-shutdown?

#1YaLikeDagsPosted 10/26/2013 8:49:27 PM
Have a few games in my Steam library that use GFWL like Dark Souls, GTA IV, RE5, Lost Planet Colonies Edition, and Super Street Fighter IV AE -- what happens to these when GFWL shuts down?

I know the Batman games were updated and moved to Steamworks, but has anything been said about other titles? What's the worst case scenario after the service shutdown? Will I no longer be able to launch the games?

Bulletstorm for instance won't let me get past the main menu unless I'm signed in with an Xbox account. Can't even play single player otherwise...

Worst case scenario is you won't be able to play your games without a crack. I believe it is legal to crack DRM if you legally bought the software and the DRM has become obsolete.

I don't know where you heard that, but I'm pretty sure that's incorrect.

When you buy a "game" you're only really buying a license to use said product for as long as the developer/publisher wants to allows it.

Usually they want to allow it forever, but in this instance, it gets shut down instead. It's one of the things in the fine print nobody ever reads when they sign up for services (myself included).

No I think the DMCA was modified a year or two ago to allow DRM cracks for obsolete DRM.

No word on what exactly but they've still got till July of next year to do it so not exactly hurting for time yet.

Oh, cool. Dead Rising 2 is a Capcom game, isn't it? Maybe then I can actually play the game I bought without needing my goddamn parents to make a GFWL account.

I own games from Capcom, Codemasters, Namco Bandai, Rockstar, Sega (owns rights to Warhammer 40,000 series) and Nordic Games (owns rights to Red Faction series) that utilize MS's devil service. I seriously hope they really think about their customers and take GFWL out completely.

If they don't know how to remove it, they SHOULD contact Digital Extremes/2K Games and Rocksteady Studios/WB Interactive Entertainment for some help.

I wonder if From will patch it out of Dark Souls. Seems kind of doubtful, given that we barely got the port as it was, but then again, with Dark Souls 2 coming out soon and it not being GFWL, there might be hope.
