C&C Red Alert on Windows 7

#1arleasPosted 10/26/2013 10:48:35 PM
Since the other guy had a hissy fit before I could post and closed his topic, here it is for anyone who wants to play the game:
http://hifi.iki.fi/cnc-ddraw/

Apparently the only downside to using this is that the game runs in a tiny window, but the colors are fixed and as far as I can tell with 5 minutes of playing around with it, everything works as it should.

Actually I just looked at the ini file it created, changed "windowed=true" into "windowed=false" and it worked full screen perfectly.

Thanks for giving me time to type all this up for you hissy fit guy!

yeah that ddraw is a godsend for the the old C&Cs. Unfortunately red alert hasn't been given the attention that tiberian dawn has as nyerguds patch for that is awesome. I really recommend the community patch for the first decade as well.

There is nothing wrong with the colours. You just need to turn your desktop to 16bit whilst playing. A simple, very common fix for games of it's time.

Do you have a link to this patch?

Is that the right one?

Seems like that would be a simple thing to add to "Compatibility mode" but yet it's not there. I didn't think about changing the desktop to 16 bit... But the ddraw.dll fixes the problem without the need to change anything...other than taking the game out of compatibility mode altogether.

Yeah that's the one. I recommend checking out nyerguds page as well for Tiberian Dawn stuff.

Umm, well sir.. after closing the topic I just went ahead and got the freeware version that already has 3.3 set up which is much easier (compared to TFD) playing online and no issues so stfu. I had to do nothing, the game came as is, as if brand new on windows 95.

http://redalert1.com/

Download the first online link, it comes with everything (skirmish, campaign, online). It also comes with custom resolution which I've been playing@ 1080p.

Ahh yes, I can totally see how downloading and installing all of that is much much easier than downloading a 173KB dll file and putting it in a folder.

Again, stfu. I've already recorded a 30 minute gameplay video with fraps. I'm all set. It's much easier to deal with all you do is click install and yay.
