What's the best alternative to keyboard and mouse?

#1youngval312Posted 10/27/2013 5:15:01 PM
I would really like to play MMORPGs, FPSs, etc but have an injury that prevents me from using one hand. This makes it difficult to play most games because they use WASD for movement and the mouse for look or have a lot of hotkeys (as I'm sure you're aware).

Is there anything out there that puts this all in one hand? LIke a mouse with more buttons on top of it than just the two or something? Are there any other solutions for this? Even in games with click walking, I still have to click on my skills and it slows me down a lot. :(

Like this. Is this designed for one hand or two? If you're right-handed, how would you use it, since the thumbpad thing seems to be designed for someone left-handed to use...

That device is intended for left handed use rather than having your left hand on the keyboard. Your best bet would be an MMO mouse, but even then I don't know how well that would work all by itself in MMO's. Point and click games along the lines of Diablo would work, same as league of Legends. Civilization V is another great title that only requires the mouse.

Is your injury permanent or is it something that will heal relatively soon?

If it were me I would just get an MMO mouse with a lot of side-buttons. With those, you can simply rebind WASD to the side-buttons and do everything on the mouse. It is a little bit of a disadvantage in some games since you have to constantly use the side-buttons on the mouse, which can hinder your aim. However, it should work fine.

Just on a whim I was able to play WoW with just a 16 button mouse. Right click to turn, right+left to move, 10 (0) for jumping, 11 (-) for backpedal. and then all my skills on 1-9 though I cheated and used shift+scroll wheel to swap between a few different action bars, I'm sure you could figure something out though, maybe MB3 and MB4 for up and down between action bars. That worked especially well for healing since I was also able to use healbot, I'm not sure how many classes I could have worked that out on since I only ever did it for my paladin but it was definitely doable in Wrath and Cata, haven't played since mid-Cata.

Thank you for the suggestions. Basically what happened to me amounts to a strained or worn tendon in one hand. I can type with that hand (as long as I don't do it constantly and too quickly), and use a game controller, but for some reason I can't use a mouse with it or use it for the keyboard for games when it comes to hotkeys and WASD and stuff.

Razer Naga
Logitech G600
Madcatz MMO 7 (or 9).

All pretty bleh sensor wise but have lots of buttons. Have personally owned a naga and mmo7. Preferred the mmo7.

Popular mice with the most amount of keys I've seen are these two:

Logitech G600. If you can use a controller, then what you linked earlier should work decently for movement. Logitech also makes a similar product. As for your question about using it, the thumbstick functions exactly like the left thumbstick on a controller, though it may only be quad directional rather than true analog. It's been awhile since I had one.
